Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in federal court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
